"Music can name the unnameable and communicate the unknowable." – Leonard Bernstein
For as long as I can remember, music has been a major part of my life, from experimenting with the piano as a young child to marching in high school. Music has been something that I had surrounded myself with for as long as I can remember, and this positive influence I have always found in music is something I have always wanted to share with the next generation.
I strive to make whatever space I teach in a safe space for my students. This is something that I have seen in my experience as a student, and something that I want to bring to students in the future. As a preservice music educator, I strive to cultivate a classroom environment where students feel valued, inspired, and safe to express themselves.
I believe that all music learners should have a stake in their education, as well as having a plethora of musical experiences available to them. Engaging students however possible in the classroom is monumental for ensuring success, and students deserve to have agency in what they learn.
My name is Kam Balcom, and I am a Music Education major on the band track here at SUNY Potsdam. Music has been a positive influence on my life for so long, and I am eager to share that with the next generation.
